For the Alandur seat, the DMK re-nominated the incumbent T. M. Anbarasan, the Minister for MSMEs and a long-time party veteran. He faced S. Saravanan, a seasoned leader from the AIADMK who campaigned heavily on improving local civic infrastructure and addressing the long-standing water-logging issues in the constituency. The new formidable entrant was M. Harish, representing the TVK, who aimed to disrupt the established order by appealing to the area’s vast youth and service-sector workforce.
The 2021 election saw T. M. Anbarasan (DMK) retain his seat with 1,16,785 votes (49.12% vote share), defeating B. Valarmathi (AIADMK), who polled 76,214 votes. The victory margin was 40,571 votes. In the 2016 election, the seat was won by T. M. Anbarasan (DMK), who polled 96,877 votes, defeating the AIADMK’s Panruti S. Ramachandran by 19,169 votes.
The voter turnout this year was 86%, which is a major jump in comparison to 61% of the 2021 elections.
Alandur (Constituency No. 28), located at the southern entrance of Chennai, is a strategically vital hub connecting the city with its suburbs. A socially diverse electorate, comprising a mix of industrial workers, government employees, and a rapidly growing middle-class population in areas like Nanganallur and Adambakkam, makes it a high-stakes seat with a rich political history, having famously been represented by former CM M. G. Ramachandran.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.15%, with results declared on May 4. The polls witnessed an intense three-way contest that challenged the state’s traditional bipolar political structure. The electoral battle was primarily between the DMK-led alliance, including the INC and other parties, headed by MK Stalin and the AIADMK-led alliance, headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, along with the BJP and other parties. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking actor Vijay’s political debut as a third force across all 234 constituencies.
