Malayalam feels like my native language now, says Mokksha
Mokksha charmed the Malayali audience through her portrayal of goddess Bhagavathy in Kallanum Bhagavathiyum last year and is now gearing up for her next project, Chithini. Having essayed lead roles in Bengali films Karma and Sorsephool, the actress then proceeded south. In a chat with us, the actress spoke about her upcoming works and how she was introduced to the Malayalam industry.
‘Learned all the dialogues for my first Malayalam film’
The first south industry that I worked in was Tamil, then Telugu, followed by Malayalam. Vijayan sir (director East Coast Vijayan) saw my pictures and thought I would be apt for the role of Bhagavathy. I was sceptical at first because for me, Malayalam is the toughest language. I had to learn the entire script and deliver dialogues. Even though my character was dubbed, the director wanted that perfection. In Chithini, too, (also directed by Vijayan) I had many dialogues. Vijayan sir made me talk like a Malayali girl. Now, I don’t feel like I am working in a different language.
‘I was a classical dancer first and then became an actress’I don’t have a film background. I was a classical dancer (trained in Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Odissi) and did theatre too. Then, I became a school teacher in Barrackpore. I was working and studying parallelly. It was then that I was approached for a character role by a veteran director in the Bengali industry. After that, I did some supporting roles before securing the lead role in Karma in 2020.
"I was told that I look like a Malayali. Now, in other states also people are convinced that I am a Malayali. I still remember, at Coimbatore airport, Tamilians started talking to me in Malayalam- Mokksha
‘Malayalam films are much loved in my family’
My father is a big fan of Malayalam films. He is very proud that I am working in this industry. Malayalam films are widely viewed because of OTT and we also watched quite a lot of them. Even Bengali makers are excited about it and there is this big buzz about the industry all around and names like Fahadh Faazil and Dulquer Salmaan are now nationally known. The industry is making wonderful movies with great content with medium budgets.
