Ranchi: Ranchi University (RU) is all set to start a wellness centre in Feb to help its staff and students alleviate stress, stated university sources adding that various departments would jointly run its activities.
Sources said that the centre would be operational at Madan Mohan Malviya Teacher’s Training Centre located near the Oxygen Park in Morabadi area of Ranchi city adding that its structure would be constructed by a bank.
It said that the RU departments related to psychology, performing and fine arts and yoga would operate the institutions. Any staff or student can visit the centre and participate in various activities like yoga, music and other wellness activities to relax.
Additionally, counsellors would also be available at the centre and the identity of the person with mental health issues would remain anonymous.
RU spokesperson and deputy director, vocational education, Smriti Singh, said, “The idea has been outlined by RU vice chancellor Dr D K Singh. He believes in the proverb that prevention is better than cure. A stressed out person can calm down while practising their hobbies here and they would be helped by experts. Counselling on time would save many from taking medicines. The centre would start within two months”
She said that any student intending to join the centre should contact their head of department.
When contacted, state vice president of National Student’s Union of India, Aman Ahmed, stated, “The measure is good provided it does not prove to be a mere ritual. The students should not be charged for it. Moreover, the university should improve the education environment to benefit the students.”
