Chhattisgarh offers 50% rebate on property registration for women

RAIPUR: Boosting women’s ownership of assets, the Chhattisgarh govt has announced a 50% rebate on registration fees for properties registered in the name of women. The decision, cleared on the initiative of chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai and notified in the official gazette on Wednesday, takes immediate effect.Officials said the move is intended to encourage families to register immovable property in the name of women, thereby strengthening their economic security and social standing. The govt expects the rebate to gradually improve women’s participation in property ownership, a key indicator of financial independence.Chief minister Sai described the decision as a “historic step” towards women empowerment, stating that ownership of land and property enhances confidence and provides long-term security. “An empowered woman strengthens not just the family but the state,” he said.Finance minister O P Choudhary acknowledged that the rebate would entail an estimated revenue impact of around Rs 153 crore but termed it a “strategic social investment”. He said the long-term benefits of improved financial inclusion and asset ownership among women would outweigh the immediate fiscal cost.According to the gazette notification, any document related to the transfer of immovable property executed in favour of a woman will be eligible for a flat 50% reduction in the applicable registration fee.The move places Chhattisgarh among states attempting to use fiscal incentives to address gender disparity in property ownership, with officials indicating that the impact will be closely monitored in the coming years.
