Pune: A software engineer (43) from Navti Peth lost Rs 14 lakh to cybercrooks, who posed as Mumbai police and threatened her that they have registered a case against her after some criminals have had misused her Aadhaar details.The woman had filed an online complaint following the fraud that happened in June last year. After preliminary investigations, a case was registered with the Vishrambaug police on Thursday.An officer from the Vishrambaug police said the crooks contacted the woman in June last year and told her that they were from the Mumbai police. They also told her that some criminals have been booking rooms at several hotels using her Aadhaar details, and a complaint has been registered against her.After some time, the woman received a video call. The caller claimed he was from the Mumbai cybercrime office and shared his identity card with the woman. The bogus ‘officer’ initially threatened to arrest the woman, but later, he assured her that he would help in the case and told her to share her bank details, the police officer said.Under the pretext of verification of her bank account, the man told her to transfer money to the bank accounts provided to her. “The woman transferred Rs 14 lakh to those bank accounts and lost it,” the officer said.
