Centre clears Rs257cr funding for infra push before Kumbh
Nashik: In a major infrastructure boost ahead of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027, the Centre has approved Rs257 crore under the Urban Challenge Fund (UCF) for projects worth nearly Rs1,900 crore proposed by the NMC.The funding is to accelerate key upgrades, including expansion of the road network, augmentation of water supply systems, and strengthening of sewerage infrastructure. Plans for the rejuvenation of the Godavari river and improvements in urban mobility have also been cleared. Civic officials said the approval reflects the centre's confidence in the corporation's planning and execution capacity. The projects are aimed at enhancing service delivery while preparing the city for the significant surge in footfall expected during the Kumbh Mela. The assistance is also expected to help fast-track long-pending works, while improving environmental sustainability and easing traffic management pressures. Among the key initiatives is the Nashik Integrated Road Mobility Augmentation and Logistics plan.Sources in the civic body said financial discipline played a crucial role in securing the grant. The NMC had earlier raised Rs400 crore through municipal bonds, which strengthened its case for central assistance. The approved grant covers around 15% of the total project cost, with the remaining funds to be mobilised through internal resources and other financing mechanisms. Officials said the projects are expected to transform Nashik into a more resilient and future-ready city.Municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri said the sanction marked a significant milestone for the city's development trajectory. "The approval under the urban challenge fund is a moment of pride for Nashik city. It reflects the success of systematic efforts, modern urban infrastructure planning, and a long-term development vision. This funding will help Nashik move towards becoming a more capable, cleaner, and prosperous city," Khatri said.According to NMC officials, of the Rs257 crore sanctioned under the UCF, Rs100 crore will be allocated to a water treatment plant and related works, Rs56 crore to the Clean Godavari mission, and Rs37 crore for developing parking facilities for trucks and private tourist buses, along with other civic projects.
