Kolhapur: Sangli superintendent of police Tushar Doshi on Monday ordered an inquiry by a senior police officer into an alleged brutal assault on two cousins by four policemen from Ishwarpur police station's detection branch unit while the victims were attending a damaged water pump along the Krishna river bank near their farm at Nerle village on Saturday afternoon.
"I have asked the additional superintendent of police Kalpana Barawkar to conduct an inquiry into the alleged assault and submit a report," Doshi told TOI. Barawkar will be visiting Ishwarpur on Tuesday to conduct the inquiry.
The families of the two cousins have given a complaint application to the Ishwarpur police, but no FIR was registered till the time of going to press on Monday. The duo's relatives told TOI that the victims suffered brutal injuries to sole of their legs. The two _ Avdhoot Dhanaji Patil (20) and Viraj Suresh Patil (19) were admitted to the sub-district hospital in Ishwarpur town after the incident on Saturday.
Sandip Patil, police inspector in charge of Urun Ishwarpur Police Station, told TOI, "The accusations are false. The four cops went there on information that two individuals had arrived to trade firearms. The police took one of the two into the van and the second one ran away on the tar road barefoot which caused the injuries.
He might have felt that he was being kidnapped and misunderstood the cops despite the latter showing him their identity cards. The cops have not assaulted any of them. The one, who ran away, started shouting which we believe might have alerted the two individuals who might have arrived in the vicinity to sell firearms."
Sanjay Patil, uncle of the injured cousins and sarpanch of Nerle village told TOI, "Avdhoot and Viraj were asked to reach the site where an electrician was to arrive to repair the water pump . After some time, two cops in civil dress approached the two who were waiting by the road side. One of them dialed someone and two others came. The four started assaulting them. Avdhoot managed to run away and Viraj was put into a car and was taken away. He was released after several kilometers. The complaint is filed and we demand that the four cops be booked for attempted murder. The case is not yet registered. If it is not registered we will take out a march on the police station."
