Chandrapur: Maharashtra will experience the fascinating celestial phenomenon of zero shadow days from May 3 to May 31, offering residents across the state a rare opportunity to observe the Sun positioned directly overhead, causing shadows to disappear briefly during noon.
According to Chandrapur-based Sky Watch Group president Suresh Chopane, this annual astronomical event occurs in regions located between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn when the Sun's apparent path aligns perfectly overhead during its northward and southward movement.
"On Zero Shadow Day, vertical objects cast almost no shadow for a few moments as the Sun reaches zenith," Prof Chopane explained, adding that Maharashtra's geographical spread allows different districts to witness the event on varying dates throughout May.
The phenomenon will begin in Sawantwadi on May 3 and gradually progress northwards, reaching Chandrapur on May 20 and Nagpur on May 26 while Toranmal in Dhule district by May 31. Major cities including Pune (May 13), Mumbai (May 15), Nashik (May 19), Chandrapur (May 20), and Nagpur (May 26) are among the locations scheduled to observe the event.
