Mumbai: A 21-year-old man was arrested by Dindoshi Police for the theft of gold ornaments and cash belonging to his mother and sister-in-law from their home in Goregaon East. The accused told the police that he sold the ornaments and splurged the money on partying and eating out with his girlfriend.
The FIR was registered by the police on May 11 after a complaint was lodged by the accused's mother. The 47-year-old complainant, who is a homemaker, told the police that she had kept her and daughter-in-law's gold jewellery valued at Rs 3 lakh, besides Rs 40,000 in cash, in a plastic box that she had placed in an iron trunk. Last month, she visited her hometown. On her return, on April 7, she found the ornaments and cash intact in the trunk.
But on April 15, all the valuables vanished. She told her husband, and they searched for the valuables in the house, but in vain. As there were no signs of forced entry on the door, the couple suspected insider involvement. The couple has two sons, aged 25 and 21, and a daughter, 17.
After the police were informed, they summoned the younger son for questioning. But he did not turn up and ran away from the house, causing the police to suspect his involvement. The police then tracked him down and detained him. On questioning, the accused admitted to stealing the cash and jewellery. He told the police that he sold off the ornaments through his girlfriend and her friend, and they spent the money on partying and eating out.
