Asiatic lion in Mumbai’s Sanjay Gandhi National Park in ill health
Times News NetworkMumbai: A 4.6-year-old Asiatic lion named Bharat (L5) at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park is very ill, and his health is being closely monitored.“Blood investigations indicated the possibility of serious systemic illness. Therefore, additional samples were collected and sent to multiple laboratories for confirmation and comparative evaluation. Findings suggested the possibility of blood parasitic infection and/or complications associated with an old hind-quarter injury, including possible trauma during routine movement,” said a press release issued by the national park. Last month, a tiger cub died of Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), a rare viral condition. The SGNP press release said the lion arrived from Sakkarbaug in Jan 2025. Subsequently, in March 2026, Bharat (L5) showed signs of illness, including loss of appetite and dullness. Faecal samples were collected for viral screening, and laboratory investigation confirmed positivity for Feline Panleukopenia Virus infection.“At present, Bharat (L5) is showing signs of hind limb paresis, and swelling of the nictitating membrane persists. He is under continuous observation, supportive care and treatment by veterinarians,” stated the press release.
