Steps being taken to revive Barkur’s past glory: HK Patil
Udupi: Tourism minister HK Patil said efforts will be made to revive the historical glory of Barkur by preserving and restoring its heritage structures without altering their original character.Speaking at a programme held on Panchalingeshwara Temple premises in Barkur, Brahmavar taluk, after visiting the temple and nearby tourist spots on Wednesday, Patil said the region's historic forts, gateways, temples and other structures must be conserved and rejuvenated to showcase their legacy to future generations. He expressed concern that the rich history of the region is gradually being forgotten and stressed that officials must take greater responsibility in preserving it. "Protecting every stone that reflects our history is our foremost duty. We must not fail in this responsibility," he said. Patil noted that Barkur was once ruled for a long period by the Alupa dynasty, which holds a significant place in history. It is important to educate the younger generation about the governance system of the Alupas, who are known for maintaining peace without internal rebellions or conflicts with neighbouring rulers. To revive Barkur's heritage, the minister said a committee will be formed to prepare a detailed project report. "Steps will be taken to restore Barkur's past glory without disturbing its original structure," he said. Referring to similar efforts elsewhere, Patil said around 3,500 artefacts discovered in wells and waterbodies in Lakkundi are being preserved, and plans are on to develop an open-air museum there. About 35 temples and 35 wells have already been identified, restored and protected, and efforts are ongoing to bring them back to their original form. He said a plan is in place to identify and restore 101 wells and 101 temples in Lakkundi, as mentioned in historical records, within a year.
