Watch: At 70-ft tall, 'world's largest Messi statue' erected in Kolkata ahead of GOAT tour; Z-category shield for football king
KOLKATA: Kolkata is preparing for a moment many in the football-loving city have dreamt of for years, as Lionel Messi is set to arrive on 13 December.
In the northern suburb of Lake Town, the Sree Bhumi Sporting Club has constructed what it claims is the world’s largest statue of the Argentinian icon — a 70-foot iron structure depicting Messi lifting the World Cup trophy.
Built in just 40 days, the statue awaits a virtual inauguration by Messi himself, with organisers giving it final touches ahead of the footballer’s visit.
Across the city, anticipation is reaching a fever pitch.
For thousands of Messi supporters in Kolkata, the countdown has already begun. Many who secured tickets for Saturday’s event describe the wait as “pure happiness”, with some comparing the passes to treasured lottery winnings.
Ranadhir Ghosh, a businessman, still recalls the atmosphere when Argentina last played at Kolkata’s Salt Lake stadium in 2011. “I saw him from a distance in 2011, and that moment stayed with me,” he said. “This time, I am determined to capture every second. Messi in Kolkata again feels surreal.”
While many have already laid out their blue-and-white shirts, others are rushing to buy new ones from BC Roy Market — a bustling hub of sports merchandise in central Kolkata. “Almost all the shops are selling Argentina jerseys with most having Messi written on the back,” said Mohammad Sabir, a vendor.
At the Salt Lake stadium, preparations are in full swing. Authorities are cleaning seats and washrooms, putting up signage and installing guardrails in anticipation of heavy crowds.
A security supervisor said arrangements were being strengthened for the expected turnout. “Along with Messi, there will be several other VIPs and celebrities on Saturday. Given the craze for Messi, we are expecting a full house and arrangements are being made accordingly,” he said.
Messi’s return — both to Kolkata and to the stadium where he last played 14 years ago — has set off a wave of excitement in a city that prides itself on its passion for football.
When Messi arrives in India for the GOAT India Tour 2025, he will move under an exceptionally tight security blanket.
The world’s most celebrated footballer is set to receive Z-category protection, with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) overseeing his movements and a green channel ensuring uninterrupted transit across the city.
