Vijay Hazare Trophy Highlights: Prithvi Shaw departs early in low-scoring game; Shreyas Iyer impresses on return

Vijay Hazare Trophy Highlights: The latest round of Vijay Hazare Trophy matches saw a mixture of high-scoring heroics, dominant chases, and thrilling last-over finishes. Delhi comfortably beat Railways by six wickets, chasing 180 in just 21.4 overs. Opener Priyansh Arya was the star with 80 off 41 balls, supported by Sarthak Ranjan’s 33 and captain Rishabh Pant’s quickfire 24 from 9 deliveries. Navdeep Saini and Ayush Badoni dismantled Railways’ batting, claiming three wickets each, while KT Marathe top-scored with 51.

Punjab also recorded a convincing win against Goa, chasing 212 with ease. Harnoor Singh anchored the innings, remaining unbeaten on 94, while Naman Dhir contributed 68 off 65 balls. The pair shared a 131-run partnership, proving decisive despite Shubman Gill’s underwhelming outing.

Hyderabad marked their first win of the season with a crushing 107-run triumph over Bengal. Aman Rao’s brilliant double century set up the massive total, complemented by Mohammed Siraj’s four-wicket haul. Shahbaz Ahmed fought valiantly for Bengal with a century but could not prevent the defeat.

Mumbai narrowly defeated Himachal Pradesh in a shortened 33-over thriller. Led by Shreyas Iyer, who smashed 82 off 53 balls, Mumbai managed a last-over finish. Shivam Dube starred with the ball, taking four key wickets, while India teammates Yashasvi Jaiswal (15) and Suryakumar Yadav (24) made modest contributions.

Kerala crushed Puducherry in a one-sided affair, led by Vishnu Vinod’s explosive 162 from 84 balls, which included 14 sixes and 13 boundaries. His innings overshadowed star batter Sanju Samson, who managed just 11, sealing a dominant win for Kerala.

Overall, the day showcased a blend of stellar individual performances, strategic partnerships, and tight finishes, highlighting the competitive spirit and depth of talent in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Vijay Hazare Trophy Live Score: Shubman Gill to finally get game time?
By now, Shubman Gill has likely made peace with his absence from the T20 World Cup squad. His signature brand of classical aggression, the very template that has been a big success for him and his IPL team Gujarat Titans, seemingly fell out of favour, with the selectors’ opting instead for a high-octane T20 opening pair.

Gill now returns to the format most naturally aligned with his style of play — the 50-over game. He is expected to be back in Punjab’s XI for their Vijay Hazare Trophy Elite Group C match against Goa here on Tuesday, after having missed the previous game against Sikkim.

Gill trained with the squad at the Rajasthan Cricket Association Academy on Monday, going through warm-ups before batting in the nets against pace and spin. He later took part in catching drills and stayed back for extra throwdowns.

The remaining group games are important for Punjab’s qualification push and for their net run rate. Punjab lead Group C with 16 points from five matches, while Mumbai are also on 16, making the final two fixtures significant.

For Gill, the VHT games also serve as match practice ahead of India’s ODI series against New Zealand starting Jan 11, in which he is set to captain. The BCCI has encouraged centrally-contracted players to feature in domestic cricket when fit and not on national duty.
