Fresh political controversy has erupted after slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed inside JNU following the Supreme Court’s refusal to grant bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. The apex court cited prima facie evidence of their role in the larger conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots. The BJP launched a sharp attack, accusing the ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ of glorifying those charged under terror laws and undermining national security. Senior BJP leaders said the sloganeering shows disrespect for the Supreme Court’s verdict and India’s constitutional framework. Opposition leaders pushed back, with Congress and RJD questioning the government’s response and warning against shrinking democratic dissent. CPI(M) leaders also criticised the slogans but urged restraint. As political tempers rise, the JNU incident has reopened old fault lines over nationalism, free speech, and campus politics.
