Calcutta high court directs CBI-SIT to submit report on ‘hushing up’ allegations in RG Kar rape-murder case by June 25
KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under its joint director (East) to probe allegations that aspects of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case were suppressed or “hushed up”.The court further instructed the SIT to submit a detailed status report of its investigation by June 25.The direction comes amid ongoing judicial scrutiny of the 2024 R G Kar case, in which a trainee doctor was raped and murdered on the hospital premises. The case originated from a crime that took place on August 9, 2024, after which the High Court handed over the probe to the CBI on August 13, 2024. On December 24, 2024, the victim’s parents approached the High Court seeking a fresh investigation. Sanjay Roy, the main accused, was convicted on January 18, 2025, and sentenced to life imprisonment on January 20, 2025.Subsequently, on January 24, 2025, the CBI moved the High Court seeking the death penalty for Roy, while Roy himself filed an appeal on July 9, 2025, seeking acquittal. On August 28, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh recused himself from hearing the matter, and later, a division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Md. Shabbar Rashidi released the case on March 11, 2026.(This is a developing story)
