KANPUR:A boat overturned in the Yamuna River in Hamirpur on Wednesday, leaving two people dead and four missing, including children. Ten people, including women and children, were on board. The boatman saved three people, while the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and police recovered two bodies from the river on Thursday morning.
The accident occurred late Wednesday evening, about 25 km from the district headquarters, when the passengers were returning by boat from the opposite side of the Yamuna after consuming muskmelon and cucumber. The boat overturned in the middle of the river during the return journey.

The incident took place in Majra Kutubpur Patia of Bhauli Gram Panchayat under the Kurara police station jurisdiction. The village is located on the banks of the Yamuna River. A village resident, Shripal, had his daughter’s wedding on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, after the farewell ceremony around 6 PM, ten relatives boarded a boat to cross the Yamuna. They gathered muskmelons and cucumbers, and after eating, were returning by boat when it suddenly lost balance and overturned.
The boat was operated by Dhiru, who rescued Vishnu, Rinku and Parul. Akanksha (9), Rani (9), Brajrani (25), Labhyansh (5), Gorelal (6) and Aditya (11) went missing. On Thursday, rescue teams of NDRF and police found the bodies of Akanksha and Brijrani.
Police and administrative officials reached the spot. The search for the missing was affected by darkness. A search operation continued with divers, and the NDRF was called in for rescue efforts.
The three rescued people were taken to Kurara Community Health Centre. District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal and Superintendent of Police Mrigank Shekhar Pathak arrived at the scene and ordered additional police deployment along the riverbank and more teams to search for the missing. The DM said the NDRF team from Kanpur also joined the search operation from morning.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took notice of the incident and directed officials to locate the missing people promptly, and said negligence would not be tolerated.
Boatman Dhiru said, "When the boat capsized, he immediately jumped into the river and saved three people. However, four persons are still missing. He mentioned that everyone had come for his sister's wedding and had crossed the river to gather muskmelons. The boat suddenly overturned on their way back, causing the accident."
