As the world observes 40 years of the Chornobyl disaster, the largest civilian nuclear disaster in history, Russia continues to be a problem for global nuclear safety. Just as Moscow had hid the extent of the Chornobyl disaster that had taken place on Ukrainian territory, Russia today has occupied the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, since the early days of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Moscow uses Ukraine's ZNPP for nuclear blackmail, stationing Russian troops directly on the nuclear power plant's complex. ZNPP has also taken damage during the course of the war, with the Russians showing complete disregard for safety. TOI's Rudroneel Ghosh spoke with Dymtro Orlov, mayor of Enerhodar, where ZNPP is located, on the condition of the nuclear power plant, life under occupation, and possible solutions to this dangerous issue.
