Kanpur ‘feels-like’ 41°C, high humidity makes conditions worse
Kanpur: Even as the mercury saw only a marginal rise in Kanpur division on Monday, residents experienced intense heat, leaving many uncomfortable during the noon hours.
The maximum temperature was recorded at 37.6°C at the CSA weather observatory, just 0.6°C higher than Sunday’s reading. However, the perceived temperature soared much higher, with the heat index indicating conditions close to 41°C, making the weather feel significantly harsher than actual readings suggested.
Weather experts said the spike in “feels-like” temperature was driven by high humidity and dry atmospheric conditions, which together created heatwave-like discomfort across the region. They advised people to remain well-hydrated, especially during prolonged outdoor exposure.
The minimum temperature stood at 25.8°C, nearly one degree above normal, indicating that nights are also turning warmer and offering little relief from the daytime heat.
According to S Sunil Pandey, weather expert at CSA University, south-easterly winds blowing at speeds between 6.7 kmph and 12.1 kmph, coupled with relative humidity peaking at 61%, contributed to the oppressive conditions.
He added that dry weather and humidity together are amplifying the sensation of heat, making conditions feel close to a heatwave despite moderate actual temperatures.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued dry weather with bright sunshine over Kanpur division on Tuesday as well. A gradual rise in daytime temperatures is expected in the coming days, which may further intensify the heat conditions.
