Mercury jumps 5 degrees overnight, day temp crosses 41 mark
Indore: After a few comparatively softer evenings earlier this week, Indore slipped back into the familiar discomfort of peak summer on Friday. The change was not gradual. It arrived overnight. The city recorded a sharp jump of nearly five degrees Celsius in minimum temperature within just 24 hours, rising from 21.6 degree Celsius on Thursday to 26.3 degree Celsius on Friday.Residents who stepped out early in the morning were met not with relief, but with warm air that already carried the feel of an afternoon. By 8.30 am on Friday, the temperature had already crossed the 31-degree Celsius mark, giving residents an early taste of the intense heat that continued to build through the day.Friday also marked the first time this May that Indore’s daytime temperature crossed the 41-degree Celsius mark.Indore’s daytime temperature climbed to 41.2 degree Celsius, rising nearly two degrees from Thursday’s 39.9 degree Celsius. Though still one degree below normal, the sudden spike brought back the harsh edge of summer that many believed had briefly weakened after isolated rainfall and cloudy weather earlier this week.
Despite isolated light showers in some parts of the city and partially cloudy skies during the day, the atmosphere remained dry and uncomfortable.According to meteorologists, the weakening of weather systems active around western Madhya Pradesh has once again allowed hot winds to strengthen across the region. Winds on Friday remained south-westerly, with speeds touching 41 km/hr.Meteorological scientist Divya Surendran said that maximum temperatures were expected to rise gradually by another 2 to 4 degree Celsius over the next four days. Weather experts have warned that the mercury may touch 43 degree Celsius early next week, with heatwave-like conditions likely to develop if the current trend continues.Tracking The TempMay 8 41.2/ 26.3May 7 39.9 / 21.6May 638.1 / 22.6May 5 37.6 / 21.0May 4 38.2 / 25.5May 3 39.7 /25.7May 2 40.0 /25.6May 1 39.4 /25.5May Temp Extremes in Indore In Last 10 Years· 2016 & 2024 were the hottest May months in past decade· Max temp touched 44.5 degree C on May 19, 2016 & May 23, 2024· In 2021, lowest peak summer max temp of 40.5 degree C was recorded· May 2024 also remained among the ‘coolest’ in recent years, with minimum temp dropping to 17.2 degree C on May 5
