Hyderabad: The spectacular Telangana victory gave a huge respite to Congress despite the party facing stunning reverses in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan where Rahul Gandhi said the party would retain power and wrest Madhya Pradesh from BJP.Political observers say the party making a comeback in Telangana after 10 years enhances its chances of securing a significant number of MP seats in 2024 general elections in South India. Karnataka and Telangana are billed as strongholds of the grand old party in South, while party is in alliance with DMK in Tamil Nadu. In AP, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party’s issue-based support to BJP adds a new facet to political arithmetic. BJP’s trajectory has also shown an increase, with expectations of significant growth in parliamentary elections. BJP’s performance in November 30 elections, doubling its vote share from 7% to 14%, is also likely to positively impact its 2024 prospects. With BRS tasting a defeat, the party may encounter challenges in 2024 LS elections. Political analyst professor K Nageshwar says, “As the party in power in Telangana, Congress will be in a pole position during LS elections. The fight will be mainly between two national parties — Congress and BJP — while BRS being a regional party is likely to be sidelined.”He says, “It will largely be a contest between Congress and BJP in the state. Telangana has come as a face-saving gamble for Congress. In 2024 elections, BJP is expected to grow substantially at cost of BRS.”We also published the following articles recentlyTelangana election results: Why a victory for Congress will be significant for grand old partyAssembly elections 2023: Congress sweeps Telangana, ending BRS rule as BJP claims victories elsewhereIt is an all-out attempt by the BJP, Congress and BRS to come to power in Telangana
