92 life convicts set for release as guv okays remission
Hyderabad: Officials of the prison department on Wednesday said governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has granted permission for remission to 92 convicts serving life imprisonment.A source in the prison department said, following an internal scrutiny process, 103 life convicts were first identified by jail superintendents and their names were forwarded to the state govt. The government, in turn, sent the list for vetting by intelligence agencies. After this verification, a high-level committee led by the chief secretary selected 92 prisoners based on the intelligence reports. The proposal was then placed before the state cabinet and subsequently forwarded to the governor for approval.Among the 92 life convicts, 86 are men and six are women. Nearly all were convicted in murder cases. Prison officials stated that the confidential list of the 92 prisoners, along with their release dates, will be announced after director general (Prisons) Sowmya Mishra and other senior officials hold discussions with chief minister A Revanth Reddy. All the selected convicts have completed at least 15 years of imprisonment."The Telangana prisons department had identified and submitted the list of eligible life convicts for remission on Feb 1, 2026, to the govt for necessary action, in accordance with guidelines and directions of the Supreme Court," officials said in a press note.
The state govt, in Oct 2025, issued a GO complying with a Supreme Court directive to conduct remission reviews three times a year. On Wednesday, the governor convened a meeting with the DG (Prisons) and approved the proposal for remission, prison officials added.It was noted that in July 2024, 213 prisoners were granted remission after a gap of several years. Among the 92 prisoners approved in the current list, one is from Medak and another from Warangal, both of whom have completed 15 years of imprisonment in murder cases.
