Hyderabad: Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has allocated 23.21 thousand million cubic feet (tmc ft) of water to
Telangana and 10 tmc ft to
Andhra Pradesh during a special meeting at Jalasoudha, Irrummanzil, on Tuesday. The two states can utilise the allocated water till Aug 15.
A three-member committee of the Board held a meeting with irrigation officials of both the states on Tuesday.
While 18.21 tmc ft of water would be released from Nagarjunasagar for the drinking water requirements of Greater Hyderabad and adjoining districts and another five tmc ft from the Srisailam project, AP would get water from the Nagarjunasagar project for its drinking water requirements.
During the meeting, Telangana officials alleged that the AP govt has utilised excess water than the allocation and Telangana’s water share should be protected.
KRMB decided to hold another meeting with repesentatives of both states on pending issues such as telematics, etc., on May 14.
Earlier, Telangana engineer-in-chief, irrigation, wrote a letter to KRMB chairman stating that Telangana needs 18 tmc ft from Krishna for drinking water purpose up to July 2026. Of the 18 tmc ft, they need five tmc ft from Srisailam reservoir for Mahabubnagar and Nagarkurnool district and 13 tmc ft for drinking water requirements of Hyderabad, Nalgonda, Suryapet and Khammam districts. The Telangana govt said if the water was released to AP, there would be drinking water crisis and drought conditions in Telangana.
The AP govt also wrote a letter in April last week seeking 10 tmc ft through Nagarjunasagar right canal for drinking water requirements up to May 31.
