Aizawl: Mizoram Police seized 2.833 kg of heroin worth over Rs 5.05 crore at two locations in northeastern part of the state on Wednesday, officials said on Thursday.
According to H Ramthlengliana, IGP and chief public relation officer of the state police, police in Saitual district intercepted a car with Assam registration number while conducting random checking on the outskirts of Keifang town on Wednesday night. The vehicle, driven by a juvenile and proceeding from Manipur to Aizawl, was stopped at Keifang Kualmawi on the basis of suspicion.
A detailed search of the car, conducted in the presence of witnesses, led to the recovery of 2.493 kg of heroin concealed inside a modified back seat hole. The heroin is valued at over Rs 4.98 crore. The juvenile driver was apprehended following legal procedures. A criminal case has been registered at Saitual Police Station.
In a separate incident, police in Khawzawl district seized 34 grams of heroin valued at Rs 6.80 lakh from Johny Hramnuntluanga, 31, of Hmunlai, Tahan (Kalaymyo), Myanmar. He was traveling as a passenger in a cab when the heroin, strapped to his thighs and back with cello tape, was found during a search around noon Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the state excise & narcotics department officials and Assam Rifles personnel, in a joint operation, seized over 620 grams of heroin on Thursday at Zote Bypass Road in Champhai district. One suspect, Jaydanamul Barbhuiya (28) of Lokanathpur, Cachar district, was arrested.
