Guwahati: After taking oath on Thursday, lone TMC MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed was heard chanting “Mamata didi zindabad”.
After almost a decade, TMC was able to bag a assembly seat this time.
Sherman, elected from the Muslim-majority Mandia seat, raised the slogan in praise of TMC chief
Mamata Banerjee and then chanted “Jai Aai Asom,” a slogan associated with Assamese regionalism.
Later, Sherman told the media that when Assam-based political parties rejected him and refused to give him a ticket, Mamata granted him one within two hours of his approach. “When other parties declared me untouchable, Mamata didi gave me a ticket and paved the path for my victory,” said Sherman, who was earlier suspended by Congress.
“In the past, I fought elections for three parties, but never got such support. Full credit goes to Mamata didi for me taking oath as MLA for the fourth time,” he said.
He said the party aims to win 20 seats in the next assembly polls and two in Lok Sabha. He added that TMC also plans to contest the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat bypolls.
