Margao in list of 48 train origination capacity cities

Margao: Margao has been identified as one of 48 major cities across India where Indian Railways plans to double train origination capacity over the next 5 years.The expansion plan, targeting completion by 2030, aims to address the rapid growth in passenger travel demand and reduce congestion at busy stations nationwide, says a press note. The infrastructure upgrade will progressively increase capacity, allowing immediate benefits as projects reach completion.The press note stated that the initiative would expand coaching terminals and enhance sectional and operational capacities to meet rising passenger demand, reduce congestion and improve nationwide connectivity across the railway network.Existing terminals will be augmented with additional platforms, stabling lines, pit lines, and improved shunting facilities.The Railways will also identify and develop new terminals in urban peripheries to distribute traffic more effectively.The plan includes establishing maintenance facilities such as mega coaching complexes, besides increasing sectional capacity through traffic facility works, signalling upgrades, and multi-tracking at critical junctions to handle the increased train movement.The initiative covers both suburban and non-suburban traffic segments, recognising their distinct operational requirements.Actions have been categorised as immediate, short-term, and long-term, with specific timelines and defined outcomes.
