Two women assaulted in Nehru Place, 2 men detained, 2 at large
New Delhi: Two women were allegedly assaulted by a group of men in southeast Delhi’s Nehru Place on Sunday morning. Police have detained two of the suspects and at least two more are at large.
One of the women, who is from Assam, later released a video, alleging that police had initially refused to register an FIR. "We contacted the special police unit for the northeastern region, after which action was taken," she claimed.
According to police, they received a PCR call around 7am from a tea point near a hotel and a team immediately reached the spot. The women told cops that they were subjected to derogatory remarks and abuses, allegedly leading to a physical altercation.
"Both survivors were taken for medical examination and an investigation was taken up," a senior officer said, adding that an FIR was also registered immediately. Police denied any allegation of racist remarks being hurled during the incident.
The woman from Assam told police that she had gone to have tea with a friend, who was from Bihar, and was buying a water bottle when two men came on a bike and passed lewd comments. Following a quarrel, the accused returned with more men in a car, and physically assaulted and molested them, she alleged. Their clothes were torn in the melee, her statement added.
The senior officer said, "CCTV footage from the vicinity was checked and many witnesses, including passersby present during the incident, were identified. Multiple raids were conducted, eight people were rounded up and questioned. Finally, four main accused were identified."
Police said an FIR was registered under sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 74 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 126 (wrongful restraint), 351 (criminal intimidation) and 78 (stalking) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Kalkaji police station.
