New Delhi: Under a sky that transitioned from soft pink at dawn to a bright blue on a crisp winter morning, citizens from across the country assembled at Kartavya Path in the national capital to celebrate the 77th Republic Day.From displays of India's latest technological advancements in military capability to showcases of an ancient culture that has endured the test of time, the celebrations stood as both an ode to the nation's rich past and a hopeful future. History was created too, as CRPF assistant commandant Simran Bala became the first woman officer to lead an all-male CRPF contingent.

The day began with a musical tribute to India's storied history, setting the tone as the theme of ‘150 Years of Vande Mataram' resonated through the skies. Complementing it were displays of Operation Sindoor, showcased through the BrahMos missile, the ‘sindoor' formation of the IAF flypast and the armed forces tableaux.The ceremony commenced at National War Memorial, where PM Modi led the nation in paying homage to the martyrs. Shortly thereafter, President Droupadi Murmu arrived at Kartavya Path along with the chief guests, European Council president Antonio Costa and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, in the traditional horse-drawn buggy.
President Murmu unfurled the tricolour, followed by the rendition of the national anthem and a thunderous 21-gun salute.A group of 100 artists heralded the parade with ‘Vividata Mein Ekta – Unity in Diversity', a musical presentation weaving together instruments and traditions from across the country. Above, four Mi-17 1V choppers of the 129 Helicopter Unit flew in the ‘Dhwaj' formation, showering flower petals as India's cultural tapestry unfolded below.The EU contingent, featuring four different flags, marched in, followed by armed forces contingents marking milestones like the debut of Shaktibaan and Divyastra. The animal contingent of the Remount and Veterinary Corps drew admiration from spectators, featuring Bactrian camels, Zanskar ponies, raptors and Indian-breed Army dogs.The parade brought together the Army, Navy and IAF, alongside the tableaux of the Veterans', Tri-Services, Indian Coast Guard, DRDO's long-range anti-ship missile, and contingents of paramilitary and auxiliary forces. Spectators watched in awe as marching bands, many of them led by women, passed, playing patriotic tunes. As missiles and military vehicles rolled into view, the crowds, filled with pride, admired the display.Several state tableaux captured the imagination of spectators. Tamil Nadu fused culture with cutting-edge industry, as a techno-Jallikattu bull etched with glowing circuit patterns charged ahead of robotic arms assembling EV batteries, symbolising the state's industrial rise rooted in tradition. Chhattisgarh paid tribute to forgotten tribal revolutionaries, honouring Veer Gundadhur of the Bhumkal Rebellion and Veer Narayan Singh, with a digital museum as the backdrop.The cinema tableau, themed ‘Bharat Gatha: Shruti, Kriti, Drishti' and created by filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, stitched together India's civilisational journey — from sages imparting wisdom under a peepal tree to the whirr of film reels, satellites and immersive digital storytelling — showcasing India's evolution as a global content hub.While Assam, Gujarat and UP presented regional heritage and development themes, Nagaland highlighted the Hornbill Festival and Kerala focused on water management and digital literacy.After the parade, nearly 2,500 artistes took the stage with vibrant cultural performances, leading up to a show-stopping IAF flypast and motorcycle display. The bikes roared past in precise formations, including Digital India, Garuda and Beam Roll, highlighting a striking blend of balance and modernity, with several personnel riding while holding laptops. The aerial spectacle included Rafale, MiG-29, Su-30 and Jaguar aircraft in a spearhead formation. Transport and surveillance aircraft flew in the Arjan and Varuna formations while six Rafale jets thundered past in the Vajraang arrowhead formation, concluding with a lone Rafale in the dramatic Vijay vertical Charlie manoeuvre."This is not just a parade; it feels like a festival of the country," said Priya Sharma, a visitor from Shimla. "The celebrations show us where we stand as a nation. Seeing the tableaux, the flypast, and people from so many states fills one with pride…"For 40-year-old Vikram Mewadi, who came with his two children, niece and nephew, the highlight was seeing the PM up close. "It was completely worth it."From the solemn homage to the martyrs to the breathtaking parade and aerial displays, the day encapsulated the nation's journey, resilience and aspirations, offering citizens a renewed sense of pride and collective hope for the future.
