Chennai weather: City sees heavy rain, relief expected from Friday; key points
CHENNAI: Chennai continues to experience intermittent rainfall as Cyclone Ditwah’s influence lingers over the region.
While the city saw scattered showers and localized downpours on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the intensity of rain is set to decrease from Friday, with only isolated spells expected in parts of Chennai and Tiruvallur.

- Unseasonal, patchy showers caught commuters off guard, with many drenched due to sudden bursts of rain despite bright weather earlier in the morning.
- North Chennai and Tiruvallur recorded continuous overnight rainfall, while the showers gradually shifted to southern parts of the city during the day.
- Manali, Ennore and Wimco Nagar recorded over 20 cm of rainfall in 24 hours, making them the most affected localities.
- Meenambakkam, Ennore and Pallikaranai saw lighter spells, registering around 1.3 cm of rainfall.
- Chennai’s maximum temperature dipped to 27.5°C, remaining nearly two degrees below normal due to dense cloud cover.
- The IMD maintained its heavy rainfall warning for Chennai and nearby districts, cautioning residents about continued instability through the day.
- Weather blogger Pradeep John (Tamil Nadu Weatherman) noted that no major rainfall events are expected for at least a week once this system moves out.
- A yellow alert was issued for multiple districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and the Nilgiris, due to the lingering impact of Cyclone Ditwah.
- Waterlogging intensified across several city pockets, such as Vyasarpadi, Kodungaiyur, MKB Nagar and Mullai Nagar, prompting civic teams to pump out excess water into Buckingham and Captain canals.
- Cyclone Ditwah’s aftereffects continued across Tamil Nadu, with three deaths reported in rain-related incidents, widespread crop damage in Nagapattinam, flooding near the Vedaranyeswara Temple, and infrastructure disruption in multiple districts.
