Haryana women’s panel chief flags live-in trend, seeks law review

Hisar: Haryana State Women Commission (HSWC) chairperson Renu Bhatia on Tuesday called for a review of laws governing live-in relationships, citing a rise in complaints and crimes against women linked to such arrangements.Addressing media in Fatehabad, she said nearly 60% of complaints received by the commission relate to live-in relationships, warranting urgent legal and social scrutiny. She added that crimes against women and declining social values were emerging as serious concerns.Bhatia said the commission recently heard 24 cases in Hansi and Fatehabad, including two sensitive cases from Fatehabad. In one, allegations involved an inappropriate relationship within a family, which she said undermined social and familial structures.She also flagged a rise in extra-marital affairs, saying it was affecting family stability and social harmony, and urged people to uphold dignity in relationships.Raising concerns over youth behaviour, Bhatia pointed to increasing substance abuse, gambling and high-interest borrowing. She said some private banks were offering loans at rates up to 36% and that the commission had submitted a report seeking action.She urged parents to monitor children's behaviour and digital exposure, and called on content creators to avoid material that disrespected women, warning of strict action against violations.
