Bathinda: BJP Bathinda district president Sarup Chand Singla was injured after a clash broke out between BJP and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers at the Polytechnic College polling booth on Tuesday evening. A few BJP workers also sustained injuries. Singla had rushed to the booth following reports of a confrontation between workers of the two parties and was later admitted to the civil hospital along with others.
Singla alleged that the party had flagged apprehensions of violence to the police in advance. "AAP workers indulged in high-handedness in several wards. They attacked me, my son and other BJP workers," he said, adding that the incident appeared to be retaliation for a protest held at the Cantonment police station on Monday night. He further claimed that some AAP workers were armed with sharp-edged weapons and firearms.
Congress district president Rajan Garg condemned the incident, saying despite political differences, his party stood with Singla. "We cannot remain silent when a murderous attack is carried out. We will join any protest call," he said.
Bathinda DSP (City-2) Arun Mundan said police were examining the matter and action would be taken based on statements and evidence.
