When TOI team reached the village in the morning on Friday amid the gale and heavy rain, all narrow lanes were seen either waterlogged or filled with sludge making it extremely precarious for walking. Slowly, a few ventured out of their houses to assess damage and discuss loss of property. Roofs blown away, bare structures stood as silent testimonies of the agonies of the night before. Storm water flooded every household during the cyclone leading many a house walls and cattlesheds to collapse. A few old houses were seen totally devastated.
I felt as if a helicopter landed on my rooftop. Everything inside the house was shaking while the howling wind made it difficult to hear people talk. I was afraid that my house would get uprooted.
A day after the very severe cyclonic circulation Biparjoy hit Kutch coast, the state forest department personnel on Friday were a worried lot. Four great Indian bustard (GIB) birds, the only surviving birds of this critically endangered species in Gujarat, have gone missing. Till evening, the forest officials were unable to spot any signs of the birds.
I stayed on because these buffaloes are the only source of my income. I am also emotionally attached with them and I cannot abandon them at the time of a natural calamity. During the cyclone, the buffaloes were very scared and I tried to calm their fears. I did not even milk them for the past two days.
India’s largest district, Kutch, is no stranger to adversities, be it the 2001 devastating earthquake or acute water crisis. But the horror that is unfolding since Thursday midnight when the Cyclone Biparjoy pummelled the region has left even the otherwise resilient population palpitating.
Even as Biparjoy exited the state to enter Rajasthan, the devastation it inflicted gradually started coming tothe fore on Friday but the despondency on the faces of thousands in shelter homes could only take solace in the fact that they were still alive to start their lives from scratch.
READ MOREWe received a call about a pregnant woman who had a very complicated case. It took two and a half to three hours for her to reach the hospital. The delivery could have been done only by operation, but we were able to do a normal delivery instead. So far, there have been 44-45 such cases, and both the mother and child are safe now.
We have been able to fight a big calamity without any casualty. NDRF, SDRF and other agencies worked tirelessly to mitigate any damage caused by the cyclone. This was possible under the guidance of PM Modi & HM Amit Shah. I am grateful to the people of the state for being supportive. Now the big challenge is to restore and get life back on track, all the agencies will work on it now and we will soon achieve success in it too
