Agra: A man was allegedly duped of Rs 25 lakh through an online gaming app after he downloaded it and shared his bank details, police said on Friday. An FIR has been lodged under the IT Act.
Umesh Singh, in his 30s, told police that he had come across an advertisement for an online game that claimed users could earn large sums of money.
He fell for it and was shown winning amounts on the screen. When he attempted to transfer the ‘winning amount' to his account, the app asked for his bank details. Soon after, money was withdrawn through multiple transactions. By the time he woke up to the scam, Rs 25 lakh had allegedly been siphoned off, police said.
Singh contacted the cybercrime helpline and later filed a complaint at the Sadar police station. He alleged that the amount was withdrawn in seven transactions.
ADCP (City) Aditya Kumar said police were examining the fraudulent app, mobile numbers and bank accounts used in the crime. "In the lure of easy entertainment and quick earnings, people often download APK files from unknown sources instead of the official Play Store, which makes them vulnerable to cyber fraud," he said.
