Watch: Russian submarine blows up as Ukraine claims underwater drone strike; first such attack
Ukraine's security service announced on Monday that its underwater drones successfully struck a Russian submarine in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, marking the first such attack in the ongoing war with Russia.
Ukraine has intensified its naval attacks in recent weeks targeting Russia-linked vessels in the Black Sea, while Russian forces continue to strike the Ukrainian port of Odesa.
Two Turkish cargo carriers were hit in recent days in what Ukraine claimed were strikes on Russian targets. Turkey has urged for a halt to attacks on ports and energy facilities, warning of an escalation in the region.
"The Security Service of Ukraine carried out another unique special operation and launched a naval attack in the port of Novorossiysk," the SBU stated on Telegram.
"For the first time in history, Sub Sea Baby underwater drones blew up a Russian... submarine," the security service added.
The SBU reported that the submarine was equipped with four Kalibr cruise missile launchers used to strike Ukrainian territory. The security service claimed the vessel suffered "critical damage and was effectively put out of action."
Russia has not provided an immediate response to these claims.
Ukraine has consistently targeted Russian ships in the Black Sea using drones and missiles since Russia's invasion began in February 2022.
