More than 140 Ukrainian drones targeted the St. Petersburg region on the final day of Russia's flagship economic summit, bringing the war to the doorstep of an event President Vladimir Putin has used to showcase Russia's resilience against Western pressure and international isolation. Taking to X, Zelenskyy said the strikes were the result of Russia’s refusal to engage in peace talks with Kyiv. The timing of the strike is particularly notable. It came as the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum concluded after hosting delegates, officials and business representatives from more than 130 countries. The attack also follows a previous drone raid on June 3, the opening day of the forum, suggesting Kyiv may be deliberately targeting periods when international attention is focused on St. Petersburg. Adding a political dimension to the incident, the strike occurred just days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky published an open letter in which he remarked that many Ukrainians would support drones paying "a visit" to SPIEF.
