990 personnel from various state police and central forces were conferred the police medals this year. The police gallantry medal list includes 25 personnel of J&K police, apart from 10 CRPF and five BSF personnel deployed in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

While all state police together bagged 78 gallantry medals, 22 gallantry medals went to the Central forces, of which CRPF alone accounted for 16. Interestingly, constables and head constables walked away with 55% of the gallantry medals, even as the list featured just one IPS officer.

The CRPF and J&K Police have together bagged over 62% of the police gallantry medals awarded this Independence Day, with 204 (58%) of the total 347 medals awarded in this category honouring personnel for counter-terror successes in J&K, 80 for action against Left-wing extremists and 14 for crushing insurgency in the northeast.

A 100-year-old former MP DGP, Harivallabh Mohanlal Joshi, a pioneer of India's first IPS batch, vividly recalls a 1969 gunfight in the Chambal ravines. Police medals for bravery in fighting left-wing extremism in India are more numerous than for counter-terrorism operations in J&K, repeating the same trend witnessed earlier this year on Republic Day. Of the 954 police medals announced, 125 were for gallantry in combating left-wing extremism, and 71 for counter-terrorism in J&K.

On the eve of Republic Day, the government announced 982 service medals for police, fire, home guards, civil defence, and correctional services. Jammu and Kashmir led in gallantry awards, with 125 Medals of Gallantry, 101 President's Medals for Distinguished Service, and 756 Medals for Meritorious Service conferred.

A total of 855 police and paramilitary personnel were awarded police medals on Friday, including 149 for gallantry in Jammu and Kashmir, Naxal violence-affected areas and others, ahead of the Republic Day

Several local cops and 13 from Gadchiroli district have been named as recipients of medals for their outstanding contribution in the course of their official duty making them eligible for the special honour on the Republic Day.
