LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh police have been awarded 12 police medals for gallantry, six President's Police Medals for distinguished service, and 71 Medals of Police Meritorious Service on
Independence Day this year.
The prestigious gallantry medal was awarded to the Additional Director General (ADG) of Technical Services, Mohit Agarwal, for leading the encounter of Subhash Batham in Farrukhabad in January 2020.
Subhash Batham, a murder convict, had held 23 children captive after inviting them to a birthday party in his godown.
At that time, Mohit was posted as the Inspector General (IG) of the Kanpur Range. Other officers who received medals in the case include the then Superintendent of Police (SP) of Farrukhabad, Anil Kumar Mishra. Other members of the team included Additional SP Tribhuvan Singh, Inspector Rakesh Kumar, Sub-Inspector Dinesh Gautam, and Constable Navneet Yadav.
Similarly, SSP Saharanpur Vipin Tada was awarded the prestigious bravery medal for an incident during his posting as SP Amroha in 2019. A notorious criminal named Kamal shot dead two police constables in Sambhal and escaped on July 17, 2019, while being produced in court. The accused was later apprehended after an encounter in Amroha on July 20 by Vipin Tada. Police Constable Praveen Kumar, who was injured in the encounter, was also awarded the gallantry medal.
In another case, deputy SP in the Special Task Force, Dharmesh Shahi, along with his team, including inspector Satya Prakash and head Constables Yashwant Singh and Imran Khan, led an operation to apprehend the history-sheeter Firoz Pathan. Firoz Pathan, who had a reward of Rs 1.5 lakh for any information leading to his arrest, was killed in an exchange of fire with the STF team on February 24, 2020, in Basti district.
On the other hand, ADG of Prayagraj zone, Bhanu Bhaskar, was awarded the President's medal for distinguished service along with five others.
