idukki dam

Idukki Dam is an arch dam built across the Periyar River in the Indian state of Kerala. A double curvature arch dam, Idukki Dam is located between two granite hills called as Kuravan and Kurathi.

The dam is located at a height of 167.68 metres (550.1 ft) and is one of the highest arch dams in Asia. The Kerala State Electricity Board has constructed this dame which today supports a 780 MW hydroelectric power station in Moolamattom.

Due to heavy rainfall in Kerala during 2018 monsoons, few gates of the Idukki Dam had been opened to release the water pressure on the reservoir. Read more about Kerala floods

As a measure of precaution, the Cochin International Airport Limited (Cial) has stopped its arrival operation from 1.10 pm on Thursday. The move comes after the third shutter of the idukki dam has been raised 50 cm at 12.30 pm on Thursday as part of the trial run for opening the idukki dam.

Govt has no plans to lift shutters of idukki dam

Terming the state disaster management authority's suggestion to lift the shutters of idukki dam well before the water level in it touches the maximum (2,403ft) as a debatable contention of academic nature, the state government has decided against draining water from the dam which -- according to Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) -- can hold water up to the full reservoir level of 2,408ft in case of additional surge of water into the dam.
