Kerala: Orange alert in 6 districts compels Idukki dam shutters to open

The IMD has issued an Orange alert for 6 districts in Kerala, including Idukki on Friday. After heavy rainfall, water levels in Mullaperiyar dam reached 138.30-feet. The Tamil Nadu government announced that it will be releasing water from the Mullaperiyar dam into Kerala at 7am on Friday. The decision to open Idukki dam has been taken to avoid a sudden rise in water levels when the Mullaperiyar waters reach the reservoir. With a very heavy rainfall alert for the district, the shutter of Cheruthoni dam in the Idukki reservoir is being opened on Friday after 4pm.
