Amazon has launched the new Fire TV Stick HD in India at a price of Rs 4,999. This new streaming device introduces updates in performance, connectivity, portability, and software experience compared to its predecessor. The company claims the new model is over 30% faster than the previous generation and introduces Wi-Fi 6 support, along with a redesigned Fire TV interface. Here are our early impressions based on specifications and first-look.
Design and setup
The Fire TV Stick HD features a more compact design than previous Fire TV models. According to Amazon, the device is about 30% slimmer than other Fire TV sticks in the lineup, making it easier to fit behind TVs without occupying much space.
One practical addition is support for Direct Power, allowing the device to draw power directly from a TV’s USB port in supported setups, reducing the need for a separate wall adapter. During setup, this results in a cleaner installation with fewer cables around the TV.
The compact design also makes the device easier to carry while travelling, particularly for users who want a portable streaming solution across hotel TVs or secondary displays.
We will evaluate long-term usability and portability in the full review.
Performance and software
Amazon says the Fire TV Stick HD offers more than 30% faster performance on average compared to the previous generation. In our brief usage, app launches and navigation using the remote appeared quite responsive, and switching between streaming platforms did not show noticeable delays. A longer testing period will provide better insight into sustained performance.
The device supports 1080p Full HD streaming with HDR10+, along with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity. Wi-Fi stability during initial streaming sessions was consistent, though we will assess performance further under slower network conditions and multiple connected devices.
The updated Fire TV interface feels cleaner than earlier versions, with separate sections for movies, TV shows, free content and live programming. The redesigned layout appears aimed at reducing the time spent navigating menus before selecting content. Smart home controls for Alexa-compatible devices are also integrated into the interface.
The Alexa Voice Remote continues to support voice search and content navigation. The device also provides access to apps including Prime Video, Netflix, JioHotstar, YouTube and Zee5, among others. However, it's important to note that subscription requirements vary by platform.
Gaming and connectivity features
One of the new additions is support for Xbox cloud gaming. Users can pair a compatible Bluetooth controller and access supported cloud games through the Xbox app, though an Xbox Game Pass subscription is required. We will evaluate gaming responsiveness and input latency in the full review.
The updated Fire TV mobile app also enables users to browse content, manage watchlists and remotely play titles on connected TVs from smartphones.
What we think
At Rs 4,999, the Amazon Fire TV Stick HD brings together a combination of faster performance, Wi-Fi 6 support, compact design and updated software navigation. The portability and simplified setup stand out in our initial impressions.
Our early experience suggests the device handles basic streaming smoothly, but the key questions remain around long-term performance consistency, real-world benefits of Wi-Fi 6, and gaming experience through Xbox cloud services. We will address these in the full review.
