As Auston Matthews’ future with the Toronto Maple Leafs has become increasingly uncertain following the team's recent struggles, the possibility of Auston Matthews landing with the New Jersey Devils has sparked a new speculation. This arose during a recent hypothetical trade proposal involving captain Nico Hischier, defenseman Simon Nemec, and a first-round draft pick heading to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
However, the latest reports suggest that questions persist over whether Auston Matthews remains fully committed to Toronto amid the team’s recent struggles and lack of sustained playoff success.
Despite the ongoing trade buzz, the forward is yet to make any definitive decision regarding his long-term future. It is also important to note that the Maple Leafs captain is under contract through 2027-28 with a full no-movement clause, making any trade complex.
Rumors suggest the New Jersey Devils could acquire Auston Matthews following a hypothetical trade proposal
Trade speculation surrounding Auston Matthews has intensified after a recent hypothetical proposal linked to the New Jersey Devils to star forward following a potential blockbuster move with
the Toronto Maple Leafs. The discussion emerged during a debate segment in which analysts explored whether the Devils could realistically acquire Matthews by offering a package centered around captain Nico Hischier, young defenseman Simon Nemec, and a first-round draft pick.
While the scenario remains entirely hypothetical, it quickly gained attention and sparked a discussion because of the massive implications for both franchises.
Meanwhile, analyst Jonny Lazarus stated, “The potential in trading Auston Matthews—and I thought the Devils were kind of interesting with that too. Toronto would obviously need a center to come back and a defenseman, and I thought the package of Hischier with an extension obviously in place, Nemec, and a 2027 first-round pick is a pretty fair deal for Auston Matthews.
He also further added that although the trade rumors are often discussed, the New Jersey Devils are usually not mentioned as a possible destination for him. “We’ve talked about Auston Matthews, but the Devils never seem to be one of those teams that come up. Would you guys see that as a potential trade partner? I know we’re kind of doing hypothetical now, but I feel like with the Devils, and with Sunny, everything is certainly fair to consider,” the analyst said.
He also reflected on the possibilities if a package of Nico Hischier, Simon Nemec, and a 2027 first-round pick would be enough to bring Matthews to New Jersey to team up with fellow American Jack Hughes.
Despite the speculation, Matthews remains under contract long term. He has two years remaining on the four-year, with a $53 million extension signed with the Maple Leafs in 2023.
But his influence within the organization is significant enough that his confidence in the team’s direction could shape future decisions at multiple levels. There’s no confirmed plan so far, and it is expected that the club as well as the player will come to a unanimous decision soon regarding the trade.
