Florida Panthers look to extend winning run after holiday break with Matthew Tkachuk's return nears
The Florida Panthers entered the NHL's holiday break riding a wave of momentum. The defending Stanley Cup champions have picked up points in nine of their last 11 games, posting an impressive 8-2-1 record since early December.
That surge has vaulted Florida into a playoff position after spending much of the season looking up at the rest of the Eastern Conference. Now the challenge becomes maintaining that success through a brutal upcoming schedule.
As recently as December 3, Florida sat at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with just 12 wins and 25 points through 25 games. The franchise looked nothing like the team that captured back-to-back championships.
Things have changed dramatically since then. The Panthers now hold a 20-14-2 record with 42 points, good for the second Wild Card spot in the East. They've also climbed within five points of the Detroit Red Wings for first place in the Atlantic Division while holding two games in hand.
Head coach Paul Maurice reflected on how quickly the situation improved after a concerning early December loss. "In our adversity, we were in trouble on December 2nd," Maurice said. "We got beat by Toronto at home with eight guys out of our lineup, and we're looking at 10 of the next 11 games, a lot of road travel, and they're all playoff teams."
The Panthers responded by winning eight of their next 10 games despite the challenging schedule. "We could have been in a world of hurt going into Christmas, almost an insurmountable task, and the opposite is true," Maurice added. "I'm really proud about how they've stuck together."
Earlier this month, the team also lost Eetu Luostarinen to a lower-body injury suffered in a freak barbecue accident. Carter Verhaeghe missed time for the birth of his first child before returning to the lineup.
Florida faces a gauntlet coming out of the holiday break. The Panthers will play three games in four nights, all against current playoff teams, to close out December. Saturday brings Tampa Bay, followed by Washington on Monday and Montreal the following night.
That schedule leads directly into the 2026 Winter Classic at loanDepot park in Miami on January 2. Florida will host the New York Rangers for the outdoor game before battling the NHL-best Colorado Avalanche two days later.
The good news for the Panthers involves Matthew Tkachuk's imminent return. The winger has been ramping up his recovery from offseason surgery over the past few weeks and could make his season debut as soon as this weekend.
Adding Tkachuk provides a massive boost on multiple fronts. His presence elevates the top six while bolstering depth and adding firepower to Florida's top power play unit.
The Panthers hold their next practice Sunday in Fort Lauderdale before practicing on New Year's Day on the Winter Classic ice inside loanDepot park. It's going to be a busy week in Pantherland as Florida attempts to extend their impressive December run.

Florida Panthers overcome depleted lineup throughout their recent wins
The Panthers' recent success becomes even more impressive considering the injuries they've managed all season. Florida has played most of the campaign without Sasha Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, Dmitry Kulikov, Tomas Nosek, and Jonah Gadjovich.Earlier this month, the team also lost Eetu Luostarinen to a lower-body injury suffered in a freak barbecue accident. Carter Verhaeghe missed time for the birth of his first child before returning to the lineup.
