Nolan Smith's arrest explained: Charges, court date, and suspension

A Super Bowl champ. First-round pick. And now the guy who thought a Georgia interstate was a racetrack.Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nolan Smith Jr. was arrested on May 15 after Twiggs County Sheriff's deputies clocked him doing 136 mph in a 70 mph zone on Interstate 16 in Georgia. The vehicle? A 2026 Lamborghini. The vibe? Not great.

What went down with Nolan Smith's arrest — Should the Eagles be worried about their star linebacker?

Deputies were already out on the highway doing high-visibility enforcement ahead of the "Click It or Ticket" campaign when they spotted the Lambo flying eastbound, rapidly changing lanes without signaling. Smith was pulled over, placed under arrest, and charged with reckless driving and speeding in excess of the maximum limits.

He followed deputies back to the Twiggs County Sheriff's Office because, apparently, even at 136 mph, he knew when to slow down. Bond was posted, and Smith was released the following day, on May 16.The Eagles have stayed quiet. No statement. No comment. Philadelphia's OTAs are set to kick off May 26, so the timing is less than ideal. Smith is due in court on July 14, but sources say he won't need to show up if he simply pays the fines tied to the citation. So this could quietly go away, or it could not. It's hard not to clock the pattern here. Smith's Eagles teammate Jalen Carter, another 2023 first-round pick out of UGA, pleaded no contest to reckless driving and racing charges in 2023 following a crash that killed two people.
Two Georgia Bulldogs, two Eagles linebackers, two reckless driving charges. Seems safe to say the NFL might want to have a word with the UGA pipeline.
Smith, 25, is coming off a strong postseason run where he recorded four sacks, breaking a franchise record on his way to a Super Bowl LIX ring. He's entering his fourth season and has real momentum heading into 2026. This doesn't torpedo his career. But it's a distraction he didn't need, and a story that's not going anywhere just yet.The Eagles are staying tight-lipped. Smith hasn't spoken publicly. And somewhere in Twiggs County, Georgia, there's a mugshot of an NFL linebacker next to a very expensive Italian car. It's surprising to see someone with this much to lose moving that fast. Literally.
