Wesley Edens found himself tied to a disturbing federal case. The billionaire investor and co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks has now been identified as the alleged victim in a massive blackmail and extortion scheme involving more than $1 billion in demands, according to reports connected to an ongoing federal investigation in New York. The allegations surfaced publicly around the same time Edens attended the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery, where his daughter, Mallory, represented the Bucks organization. Behind the scenes, however, prosecutors say Edens had already spent months cooperating with authorities after claims that private videos, threats directed at his family, and repeated financial demands spiraled into a criminal case now heading toward trial later this year.

Federal prosecutors allege that Changli “Sophia” Luo, a 46-year-old entrepreneur and founder of the nonprofit One World Initiative Advocacy, orchestrated the scheme after a brief relationship with Edens that began in 2023. Court filings claim the two first connected through LinkedIn before meeting several times in Manhattan.According to investigators, the relationship changed dramatically after their encounter.
Prosecutors say Luo later threatened to release intimate photos and videos involving Edens unless he agreed to massive financial demands. Authorities claim the threats expanded over time and included contacting members of his family, reaching out to his former wife, and warning that she would damage his business reputation with investors.
A spokesperson for Edens confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that the unnamed “Victim-1” referenced in court records was indeed the Bucks co-owner.“Mr. Edens will be making no comment on the case as the indictment speaks for itself with respect to the charges against the defendant," the spokesperson said. The spokesperson also noted that Edens is expected to testify during the upcoming trial.

What led to the controversy involving Wesley Edens?

Prosecutors say the controversy escalated after Luo accused Edens of misconduct and claimed cameras inside her apartment had recorded everything that happened between them. Court documents state she warned Edens that the footage could be shared publicly if he refused to comply with her demands.“She told him that her ‘home has cameras,’ and that everything Edens ‘did was caught on camera.’ She would go to the media, she said, unless he apologized.”Investigators also allege Luo later demanded as much as $1.25 billion after blaming Edens for a health condition she claimed developed after their relationship. Court filings state Edens denied wrongdoing but initially entered mediation discussions in an effort to protect his family from further harassment and avoid public fallout. Prosecutors say a proposed settlement eventually reached $6.5 million before negotiations collapsed. The case became even stranger after FBI agents searched Luo’s apartment in 2025. Authorities reportedly discovered phones hidden inside a laundry basket and a box of sanitary pads. Prosecutors claim one device contained manipulated explicit images featuring Edens’ face edited onto another person’s body.Luo has pleaded not guilty to charges that include blackmail, extortion, and destruction of records. She remains under home detention after being released on a $500,000 bond while awaiting trial.
