Robert Lewandowski’s final appearance at Camp Nou turned into something far beyond a routine La Liga fixture, as Barcelona’s legendary striker was given an emotional send-off filled with chants, tears and tributes after the 3–1 win over Real Betis. The 37-year-old, who confirmed his departure ahead of the match, said goodbye to the home supporters after a four-year spell that delivered goals, trophies and a lasting imprint on the club.

A night built around Lewandowski from the very beginning

From the moment he stepped onto the pitch, it was clear the evening would belong to Robert Lewandowski. Even before kick-off, the veteran forward was the centre of attention. As he came out to warm up, the Camp Nou crowd greeted him with a loud ovation. During the starting lineup announcements, there was a deliberate pause after his name was called, allowing the stadium to erupt in applause.

Every touch of the ball was met with chants. When he came close to scoring, the noise only grew louder, as supporters tried to will one final goal into existence. The atmosphere followed him throughout the match, building steadily toward what everyone knew would come at the end.

Hansi Flick ensures a final moment in the spotlight

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick was determined to give Lewandowski the farewell he deserved, starting him against Real Betis and then withdrawing him in the 83rd minute so he could walk off at his own pace and properly acknowledge the crowd that had supported him throughout his time at the club.Even without a goal, the substitution carried its own weight, as the moment became less about what happened during the match and more about allowing both player and supporters the time and space to recognise the end of a four-year spell that had meant a great deal to both sides.

Tears, chants and a farewell that lingered long after full-time

After the final whistle, the emotion that had been building all evening finally overflowed.Lewandowski walked slowly toward the centre of the pitch, visibly in tears, as the crowd rose once more to applaud him, with his teammates gathering around before lifting him into the air in celebration as the chants continued to roll around the stadium.

When he came back down, Barcelona vice-president Rafa Yuste and president Joan Laporta were already waiting, presenting him with a commemorative trophy to honour his time at the club before embracing him as the noise inside the stadium refused to fade.Even half an hour after the match had ended, fans remained outside the stadium, still singing for their departing number nine.

‘Barça will always remain in my heart’

With his wife and children watching from the pitch, Lewandowski took the microphone to address the supporters directly. “For me, this is a very emotional and difficult day. When I arrived in Barcelona, I knew this club was huge, but your support has been incredible. “From the very beginning, I felt at home here. I will never forget hearing you chant my name. Thanks to my teammates, the coaches and everyone who works at the club. “It has been an honor to play for Barça. We have shared great moments during these four years. I’m very proud of everything we achieved. “Today I say goodbye to this stadium, but Barça will always remain in my heart. Visca el Barça and Visca Catalunya.” It was a simple message, but one that carried the weight of everything he had experienced during his time in Catalonia.

Guard of honour and one final dressing room tribute

Once the speech ended, the rest of the squad formed a guard of honour, lining up to applaud him as he walked through, with the moment gradually loosening as teammates added light slaps to the back of his head while he passed, blending celebration with the kind of familiarity that reflected his standing within the dressing room.
Earlier, he had also reportedly said his goodbyes privately to teammates at the training ground, bringing to a close a chapter that had extended well beyond matchdays and into the rhythm of daily life within the squad.=

A career in Barcelona defined by goals, trophies and leadership

Lewandowski’s departure brings to an end a prolific four-year spell that began with his €50 million (approx. $58.2 million) move from Bayern Munich in 2022. Across that period, he scored 119 goals in 191 appearances, placing him 14th on Barcelona’s all-time scoring list. His debut season saw him win the Pichichi Trophy as La Liga’s top scorer, helping Barcelona secure the league title. His influence remained consistent throughout, including a remarkable 2024–25 campaign in which he scored 42 goals as part of a domestic treble-winning season.
In total, he leaves with seven trophies in Spain, including three La Liga titles and three Spanish Super Cups, having stated himself that he feels his “mission is complete.”

Hansi Flick: ‘It’s good for him and for the club’

Flick, who also coached Lewandowski during their successful spell together at Bayern Munich, spoke ahead of the La Liga clash against Real Betis where the striker would make his final appearance at Camp Nou, addressing the departure after it had already been communicated within the squad.“The conversation went well. He spoke with the team and said his goodbyes. It's been a great period,” Flick said.

“I told him I won every title with him. That's nine titles in total. It's been a privilege to have worked with him; he's a true professional. “He's a role model, he takes care of himself, that's why he plays at that level. Now he wants a change, he wants to move. It's good for him and for the club. He's a great person and a great player.” He also confirmed the decision was respected at all levels of the club. “The decision was made this way. We didn't consider other possibilities. We respect it.”

Replacing Lewandowski will not be simple

Flick also admitted that finding a successor for Lewandowski will be one of the club’s biggest challenges heading into the summer. “It’s clear that it's not easy to find someone of Robert's calibre. He's a fantastic professional and a great person. We'll miss him, but we need to renew the structure,” he said. “We have time to fill his spot. He deserves a proper send-off. He'll be a starter, he deserves it. We'll look at the market. We have time.”Barcelona’s recruitment team has already begun assessing options, but replacing a player who combined elite output with leadership and consistency will not be straightforward, especially with interest already emerging from elsewhere, including clubs in Major League Soccer and a reported formal offer from Al-Hilal, who are prepared to offer a salary in the region of €90 million per season.
