Ethiopian long-distance runner Yebrgual Melese has died at the age of 36 after suffering a sudden medical emergency while training in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Melese had been preparing for the Ottawa Marathon scheduled for May 24 and was expected to be one of the strongest runners in the women’s race. According to local reports, she fell seriously ill during training earlier this week and was rushed to hospital on Tuesday. Doctors were unable to save her. The Ethiopian Athletics Federation confirmed her death in an emotional statement. The federation called Melese a “heroic athlete” and offered condolences to her family, friends, and supporters. Her death has shocked the athletics world, especially because she was still competing at a high level and had continued training for major international races.Melese built a strong name for herself in marathon running over the years. She won major races in Houston, Shanghai, and Prague and also stood on the podium in some of the world’s biggest marathon events. Her sudden death comes just days before she was supposed to travel to Canada for the Ottawa race, where many expected her to challenge for victory.

Still, Melese’s performance remained one of the strongest runs of her career and helped her gain worldwide recognition in athletics.Back in 2015, she also finished second at the Boston Marathon, one of the most respected and difficult marathon races in the world. Over the years, she became known for her calm attitude, strong finishing ability, and experience in major international races.Her death has left runners and athletics fans mourning across Ethiopia and beyond.
