David Beckham recently opened up about one of his family’s funniest memories, and it all started with McDonald’s. Speaking to PEOPLE while discussing his partnership with McDonald’s ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the former England captain explained how the fast-food chain has been part of family moments since he was a child growing up in East London.For Beckham, McDonald’s is more than just a quick meal. He said it has always been connected to family time, first with his parents and sisters and later with his wife and children. During the conversation, he also shared an unexpected story about his youngest son, Cruz Beckham, whose love for Big Mac sauce led to a surprising delivery during the COVID-19 lockdown. The story quickly stood out as one of the most memorable moments from Beckham’s interview.

Looking back on his childhood, Beckham told PEOPLE that having a McDonald’s close to his home was exciting.“As you can imagine, as a kid, having McDonald’s close to your house was very exciting, to be honest.” He said family visits to the restaurant became a regular part of growing up.“It was always about bringing the family together, me and my two sisters, and my parents. I think McDonald’s is always like that. It’s about bringing people together.”
The former soccer star then shared a funny story involving his son Cruz. According to Beckham, he received a call during the COVID-19 lockdown from someone on his team who told him a journalist had reported that Cruz had ordered 50 packets of Big Mac sauce.At first, Beckham thought it had to be a joke. “And then 50 sachets of Big Mac sauce arrived at our house.” When he later asked Cruz about it, the answer was simple. “I asked Cruz, and he said, yeah, Dad, I missed the sauce.”Beckham also revealed that he still visits McDonald’s regularly with his family. He even shared his favorite order.“My go-to always is: Big Mac cheeseburger, large fries, which the fries always end up in the middle of the cheeseburger and a large strawberry milkshake.”The interview also turned to soccer and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Beckham called it a major moment for the sport in America and said it could inspire a new generation of players.When discussing possible winners, he stayed loyal to his home country. “I’m always gonna say England. I’m the biggest England supporter.”Still, Beckham noted that France, Spain, Brazil, Germany, and Argentina will all be strong contenders. He also pointed to Lionel Messi’s Argentina connection through Inter Miami, the club he co-owns.
