Mexico City E-Prix: Did you know last three winners of this Formula E race went on to win the title as well?
After the New Year break, Formula E Season 12 returns with Round 2 in Mexico City. The Mexico City E-Prix, set to take place at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit from January 9-10, carries an intriguing statistic that could hint at this year’s title winner. Each of the last three winners of the Mexico City E-Prix has gone on to lift the Formula E World Championship trophy. These drivers are Jake Dennis, Pascal Wehrlein, and Oliver Rowland, all of whom won in Mexico before securing the title in their respective seasons. Here’s a look at all the winners of the race and the drivers who have triumphed more than once in Mexico.
Jerome d’Ambrosio of Dragon Racing was officially declared the winner of the inaugural Mexico City E-Prix in 2016. The race was originally won by Lucas Di Grassi, who was later disqualified, handing victory to d’Ambrosio. The Belgian now serves as Deputy Team Principal at Ferrari in Formula 1.
Di Grassi bounced back from that disappointment with a remarkable victory in Season 3 while driving for Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler, having started near the back of the grid. He repeated the feat in Season 5, while his teammate Daniel Abt won the race in Season 4, underlining ABT’s dominance at the venue.
Jaguar’s Mitch Evans claimed victory in Season 6, followed by Pascal Wehrlein, who won with TAG Heuer Porsche in Season 8 and again in Season 10, also clinching the championship in the latter. Andretti driver Jake Dennis won the Season 9 race in Mexico and has already set the tone for Season 12 by winning the opening round in Sao Paulo. Oliver Rowland, who won the Mexico race and the title in Season 11, is still in form as he finished second at the recently-held Sao Paulo E-Prix.
Mexico City is now set to host its tenth Formula E race on January 10, with practice scheduled for January 9.
