Formula E confirms Tokyo E-Prix will be a night race in 2026, double-header scheduled for July
Formula E, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and the FIA came together on Thursday to announce that the 2026 Tokyo E-Prix will be a night race. The announcement came hours before Formula E Season 12’s first night race double-header weekend in Jeddah. This will be the first time the GEN3 Evo cars take over the streets of Japan after sunset. The Tokyo E-Prix double-header is returning for a third year this season and is scheduled for Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, July 26.
Formula E and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s partnership represents their agenda to promote Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs). The event aims to accelerate the city’s climate action plan, which targets net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. The night race will be powered entirely by sustainable energy and even the trackside lighting infrastructure will be sourced from advanced biofuels.
The maiden Tokyo E-Prix in 2024 was a landmark event, marking the debut of electric race cars on the streets of Japan. The 2025 Tokyo E-Prix was a historic double-header, where Japanese team Nissan enjoyed major success on home soil. Nissan driver Oliver Rowland won Round 9 and went on to seal the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship title.
She further added, “The 2026 Tokyo E-Prix, the third time Formula E will be held here in Tokyo, will be a night race to showcase Tokyo’s fascinating nightlife to the world. I am confident that the 2026 Tokyo E-Prix will not only accelerate the adoption of zero-emission vehicles and initiatives for the realization of a sustainable world but will also add more brilliance to Tokyo’s nights. The race will be held on July 25 and 26. Let’s all cheer on a race that may be even hotter than the summer heat. Tokyo will join forces with the organizers and all stakeholders involved to ensure its success.”
Thanking the Japanese authorities for making it possible, Formula E Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo said, “Hosting a Formula E night race in Tokyo is a massive milestone. This is a city that is committed to our vision of accelerating change toward an electric future, and we thank Governor Koike and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for their partnership.
“We are delighted to play a part in re-energizing Tokyo’s incredible nightlife scene and bringing exciting racing to the streets of the capital. Seeing the world’s most innovative electric race cars, the GEN3 Evo, competing under the dramatic lights of the Tokyo Bay waterfront will be an unforgettable moment for our passionate Japanese fans and those watching at home,” he added.
There are a total of 17 races across 11 global cities on the Formula E Season 12 (2025/26) calendar this year. Currently, the Jeddah E-Prix double-header is underway in Saudi Arabia.
