Bank staff locked up by angry customers
The staff of a state-run bank here were locked up by a group of customers in Muzaffarnagar after the officials allegedly refused to provide cash after working hours, police said on Friday. The incident took place on Thursday when officials of State Bank of India refused to entertain the pleas of customers after the working hours, SHO Sanjiv Sharma said. The angry customers then locked up the bank officials, he said. A police team reached the spot and freed the officials, police said.

A team of two ED officials and a RBI official raid Central Coop Bank at Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu following complaints that the bank officials accepted deposits of Rs 51 crore in demonetised notes from November 10 to 15.
Coop Banks were not authorised by RBI to receive deposits after demonetisation.

During scrutiny of huge cash deposits in bank accounts after demonetisation of high-value currency, the I-T (investigation) wing sleuths of Hyderabad had zeroed in on the account of the Uber cab driver from Hyderabad, where Rs 7 crore demonetised notes had been deposited in the State Bank of Hyderabad account in a span of a few weeks after November second week. The Uber cab driver has an account in one of the SBH branches. The account was dormant before demonetisation, an I-T official told TOI.

Jeevan Pramaan, a government initiative that enables pensioners to generate digital life certificate, witnessed 60% of their total registrations in November alone. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Kolkata-based realtor Paras Mal Lodha for laundering crores in scrapped notes, causing ripples of anxiety in legal and other circles in the capital and elsewhere. The ED started questioning Lodha three days ago when it found that he had helped Delhi lawyer Rohit Tandon and Chennai-based sand mining baron Shekhar Reddy convert crores of outlawed notes into new ones.

Delhi high court on Thursday adjourned indefinitely the hearing on pleas challenging the Narendra Modi government's demonetisation move after it was informed that the Supreme Court has stayed all proceedings pending before different courts on related issues. "The Supreme Court is seized of the issue and has also stayed the proceedings on pleas challenging the November 8 demonetisation notification pending before different high courts (in India) and has said only they would hear them," a bench of chief justice G Rohini and justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal said.

Those who are against demonetisation "are like Pakistan", said Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, slamming the opposition for criticizing the ban on high-value notes.
