Terrorists attack Army unit in Nagrota near Jammu

In an escalation of cross-border military confrontation, 8 civilians were on Tuesday killed and 22 injured in Jammu region due to Pakistani shelling.

An Indian soldier was killed in firing by the Pakistan Army across the de facto border in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, officials said.

Pakistani troops on Monday violated ceasefire by indulging in firing and shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in the twin frontier districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir.

Senior BSF officers laid floral wreaths on the coffin carrying the body of Constable Nitin Subhash at Humhama Centre of the BSF in Srinagar. Subhash sustained grievous injuries when the round blasted inside the chamber of his long range weapon he was firing in retaliation to ceasefire violation from across the LoC on Friday.

The 28-year-old jawan, hailing from Sangli in Maharashtra, had joined BSF in 2008 and is survived by his wife and two sons aged four years and two years.

Security forces launched an anti-militancy operation in the forest area of Kupwara this morning following information about the presence of militants in the area, an army official said.

He said some gunshots were exchanged at the start of the operation which was continuing when the last reports were received.

A Border Security Force (BSF) trooper was killed and three civilians injured on Saturday in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district as Pakistan troops again violated the LoC ceasefire, police said.

Police said Pakistan army resorted to unprovoked firing at Indian positions in Keran sector of the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara.

"The army has retaliated effectively and intermittent firing exchanges were going on in the area when last reports came," police said here.

The injured civilians have been shifted to hospital for treatment, they said, while identifying the killed BSF trooper as constable Nitin Subhash of Maharashtra.

A pall of gloom descended on the native village of Army jawan Mandeep, who was killed by terrorists in Macchil sector in Jammu and Kashmir. The family members of the 30-year-old martyr were inconsolable.

Navy is planning a major exercise "Paschim Leher (western wave)" in the Arabian Sea from next week. Over 40 warships, submarines will take part in naval exercise "Paschim Leher".
